The Articles of Confederation were created in 1776.
It was the first constitution made in the US. They created a one house legislature ,called Congress, with no president.
Although states could send between two and seven representatives to the Congress, they only had a single vote. Congress had
some major weaknesses. They had no power to tax, they couldn't enforce their laws, and they had no executive branch. For a
law to be passed, nine states had to approve it. Congress also couldn't make the states meet military quotas. The Articles
of Confederation could however declare war, make peace, coin money, manage foreign affairs, establish a postal system,
impose taxes, regulate trade, and organize a court system. They could also call on state militias for service, protect copyrights,
and take other necessary actions to run the federal government. Personally, I think the Articles of Confederation failed to
implement the ideals of the Declaration of Independence. I believe that the weaknesses of the document outweighed the successes.
